Transfer Admission Requirements Spring 2022
Transfer Admission Guidelines
All applications receive a comprehensive review. Admission decisions are based on GPA, intended major, rigor and breadth of curriculum, appropriateness of previous work for continued study at UW-Stout, and other predictors of success. Most transfer students admitted in recent years have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Grade trends by semester are taken into consideration as part of the review. If there are extenuating circumstances for any grades, please be sure to note this in your applicant essay/statement.
Note: For program admissions see "Minimum GPA Requirements for Admission Consideration for Specific Majors"
Minimum GPA Requirements for Admission Consideration to Specific Majors
All transfer students will be admitted as a Pre-Bachelor of Fine Arts (Pre-BFA) student. Students should submit a portfolio and essay to be reviewed by a committee of School of Art & Design Faculty, who will determine direct admissions into the BFA major of your choice. The priority deadline is no later than midnight on October 1st for spring admission. You will receive direction on how to submit your portfolio in your acceptance letter to UW-Stout. Students who submit portfolios/essays are notified by mid-October of a decision.
Submissions may be made after the priority date; however, there is no guarantee when it will be reviewed for a decision on what art-specific coursework you may be able to get into after the review is completed and whether or not registration for the next semester has begun. There is a $10 application fee assessed at the time you electronically submit your portfolio.
If you are not approved for direct admission into your BFA program of choice after a review of your portfolio/essay or if you choose not to submit a portfolio/essay at the time, you may apply for a change of major in subsequent semesters depending upon available openings in the program. BFA Foundations courses will be available to Pre-BFA students pending seat availability.

Special Note for UW System Transfer Applicants (option)
The UW System undergraduate transfer policy states that priority for admission will be given to two-year branch campuses transfers and other UW System transfers from campuses where a major is not available, subject to the limits of a campus’s enrollment target. All UW System campuses have Guaranteed Transfer agreements with the two-year branch campuses. Students admitted under these agreements should follow the requirements of the agreement. The stipulations of these agreements are not included in this listing.
