Transfer Admission Requirements

University of Wisconsin-Madison ~ Fall 2009

Minimum Grade Point Average and Credit Requirements

Admission is competitive and selective. Admission decisions are based on GPA, intended major, rigor and breadth of curriculum, appropriateness of previous work for continued study at UW-Madison, and other predictors of success. There can be no assurance of admission based on a given grade point average.

Some admission preference will be given to UW Colleges students. UW System students seeking major programs not available at their current institutions will also receive some preference.

Admission to the university does not guarantee admission to the major or professional program. Admission to the major or professional program requires a separate major declaration or application for admission directly to the program.

Grade Point Average Requirements for Transfer Students in Selected Programs/Majors

This listing is a brief synopsis of requirements for the most frequently asked about majors. Many majors, not listed here, have differing course sequence and grade point average requirements. Please consult the major department for detailed information.
NOTE: Grade point averages noted below refer to requirements for selection of students already enrolled at Madison to major programs. They are not qualifications for assured admission to the University.

BUSINESS
For transfer students who matriculated into a post-secondary institution prior to summer 2008 and do not fall under the Wisconsin School of Business’ 10- semester rule (http://www.bus.wisc.edu/undergrad/policy/10semesterrule.asp): Transfer students must complete a minimum of 12 credits in residence at UW-Madison, 54 credits, and completion of the pre-business requirements (http://www.bus.wisc.edu/undergrad/requirements/current/prb_check.pdf) in order to be eligible for admission. These requirements can be completed or in the process of being completed at the time of application to the Wisconsin School of Business. The minimum of 12 credits in residence is needed to establish a UW-Madison GPA. Admission decisions are based on the GPA of pre-business courses taken at UW-Madison, the GPA of Business and Economics courses taken at UW-Madison, and non-academic strengths such as leadership, community service, and other life experiences. Admission is highly competitive due to enrollment limitations. Students with 100 or more credits are not eligible to apply for admission. See www.bus.wisc.edu/undergrad for details.

For transfer students who matriculated into a post-secondary institution summer 2008 or thereafter, or who fall under the Wisconsin School of Business’ 10- semester rule (http://www.bus.wisc.edu/undergrad/policy/10semesterrule.asp): Transfer students who meet the following criteria are eligible to apply for direct admission to the Wisconsin School of Business at the same time they apply for admission to UW-Madison:
• Enrolled at a Wisconsin public college or university as a new freshman
• Will complete a minimum of 24 credits at a Wisconsin public college or university
• Will complete all pre-business course requirements before transferring to UW-Madison.
Transfer students apply for direct admission the semester prior to transferring to UW-Madison. If a student does not meet these criteria, they must complete or be in the process of completing 12 credits in residence at UW-Madison and the pre-business requirements in order to apply. All students have two opportunities to apply to the Wisconsin School of Business. Admission decisions are based on the GPA established in pre-business requirements, cumulative GPA, and personal characteristics which contribute to the overall strength and diversity of the Wisconsin School of Business student body. These characteristics include, but are not limited to, strength of character, ability to overcome adversity, leadership, and work experience. Admission is highly competitive due to enrollment limitations. See www.bus.wisc.edu/undergrad for details.

Special note for UW System Transfer Students

The UW System undergraduate transfer policy states that priority for admission will be given to UW College transfers and other UW System transfers from institutions where a major is not available, subject to the limits of an institution’s enrollment target. All UW System institutions have Guaranteed Transfer agreements with the UW Colleges. Students admitted under these agreements should follow the requirements of the agreement. The stipulations of these agreements are not included in this listing.
