Transfer Admission Requirements

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee ~ Spring 2010

Minimum GPA and Credit Requirements:

A minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA is required for admission.

Programs other than those listed under GPA Requirements for Transfers in Selected Programs/Majors require 12 or more attempted credits at an accredited campus. Applicants with fewer than 12 credits will be evaluated on the same basis as new freshman applicants.

GPA Requirements for Transfers in Selected Programs/Majors:

Architecture—Transfer applicants should apply by November 1 for spring admission. Applicants who have earned a minimum of 24 credits with a minimum 2.5 GPA will be considered for admission. Currently, 3.1 is the average GPA of students accepted into Level 2 of the program. The program is very competitive and selective.

Peck School of the Arts

Visual Art—The Department of Visual Arts requires all incoming freshmen and transfer students to submit a portfolio for review. Contact Frankie Flood, Director of Foundations, at (414) 229-4507 or at fflood@uwm.edu, with any questions or concerns. Or visit the Web site, for more information.

For scholarship consideration, the recommended portfolio submission deadline is October 15 for spring.

Upon acceptance to UW-Milwaukee, transfer students will be classified as pre-art or pre-art education until they have achieved a 2.5 GPA in both courses transferred and required Visual Art

Foundations-level courses, which are as follows:

Basic Art Studios: 12 credits
Art 101 Basic Drawing I
Art 102 Basic Drawing II
Art 108 2D Concepts
Art 109 3D Concepts
Art 118 Digital Arts: Culture, Theory, Practice

Art Survey: 3 credits
Art 106 Art Survey

Pre-art and pre-art education students must also fulfill the university-wide English and Math proficiency requirements before they can matriculate as BFA or BA degree candidates.

Dance—An audition is required for entry into the major. Audition dates are scheduled during the fall, spring, and summer terms. Once accepted, students may enter the program at any time but are strongly encouraged to enter in the fall term to progress most logically through the BA or BFA curricular sequence. The audition consists of classes in modern or jazz and ballet technique, followed by the completion of a writing exercise that asks students to express and specify their personal artistic interests. For further information about admission and upcoming audition dates, call the Dance Office at (414) 229-2571.

Theatre—In addition to the BA tracks, four BFA tracks are now offered: Acting, Stage Management, Technical Production, and Costume Production. Application to the BFA program occurs after a student has successfully completed the following (or equivalent) course work with a 3.0 GPA in the major:

Math Proficiency
English Proficiency
Theatre 103 Introduction to Theatre Study
Theatre 110 Acting I
Theatre 112 Theatre Production and Design
Theatre 210 Technical Theatre Practicum
Theatre 213 Play Analysis (Costume Production and Technical
Production applicants only)
Theatre 305 The Theatrical Experience

Prospective transfer students must be admitted to UW-Milwaukee before applying to the BFA program. BFA program applicants must undergo an in-person interview. Actors must also audition. Applicants will be scheduled for interviews and auditions upon receipt of a complete application packet. The following materials are required: an application form (refer to the Web site, below), a statement of purpose, a current résumé, an 8x10 black-and-white photo (for Acting candidates) or portfolio of work (for Stage Management, Costume, and Technical Production candidates), copies of all college transcripts (unofficial copies are acceptable for this purpose), and two letters of recommendation.

Call the Theatre Department at (414) 229-4947 for further information about upcoming audition dates, or visit the Web site.

Music—An audition is required for entry to the major. Audition dates are scheduled during the fall, spring, and summer terms. For further information about upcoming audition dates, call the Music Office at (414) 229-4393.

Musical Theatre—Transfer applicants must audition for the BFA Inter Arts in Musical Theatre and enter with a 2.75 GPA from the previous campus. Auditions are scheduled early in the spring semester and consist of a ballet class, a music theatre dance sequence, two contrasting musical theatre songs, and a contemporary monologue, plus completion of a writing exercise that asks students to express and specify personal artistic interests. To graduate, transfer students must complete in residence at UW-Milwaukee 40 credits in the Musical Theatre track. For more information call (414) 229-5162.
