The University of Wisconsin System: A Short Overview
The University of Wisconsin System (UWS) is made up of 26 campuses and University of Wisconsin-Extension. UWS campuses are located throughout the state of Wisconsin. Each campus varies in terms of admission requirements, majors and programs available, size of student body and opportunities available for study and activities outside the classroom.
Each University of Wisconsin campus is on a semester schedule. Fall semester begins in early September and continues through most of December. Spring semester begins in mid January and continues into the month of May. A summer term usually begins soon after the spring semester ends (in May or June) and continues until the end of August. Most campuses offer multiple summer sessions that vary in length and have different beginning and ending dates according to the length of each session.
Thirteen (13) of our campuses are known as the UW Colleges. They are freshman-sophomore campuses that offer students the opportunity to complete coursework leading to an Associate of Arts and Sciences (two-year) degree. Students enrolled at any of the 13 UW Colleges campuses will, in most cases, transfer to a baccalaureate (four-year) campus to continue their study and earn an undergraduate degree (i.e., Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree). The UW Colleges campuses can be found throughout Wisconsin. Most of them do not offer on-campus housing, however, UW-Marathon County and UW-Richland offer student housing.
Thirteen (13) of our campuses are baccalaureate campuses. These campuses are located throughout Wisconsin and offer bachelors (four-year) degrees in hundreds of different majors and programs. All 13 campuses award bachelors and masters degrees. UW-Milwaukee awards degrees through the doctoral level. UW-Madison offers degrees through the doctoral level and includes professional schools for advanced degrees in law, medicine, pharmacy and veterinary medicine. Each campus varies in terms of majors and degrees available, admission requirements, size and geographic location. All of these campuses offer on-campus housing for students.
