The Wisconsin Youth Apprenticeship Program

The Youth Apprenticeship (YA) program was authorized in 1991 by Wisconsin Assembly Bill 91 Act 39 and serves as the cornerstone of Wisconsin's School to Work System. The Youth Apprenticeship program is aligned with the three primary components of the Federal School-to-Work Opportunities Act, which requires participating State systems to include school-based learning, work-based learning and connecting activities.

There are currently 22 programs available. Students in Wisconsin public and private high schools who have achieved junior level and meet other YA criteria are afforded an opportunity to pursue a two-year elective program that combines academic and technical classroom instruction with mentored on-the-job learning.

Each UW System institution has evaluated YA programs in Biotechnology, Engineering, Finance, Health Services, and Printing to determine if the curriculum will help a student meet college preparatory credit requirements for admission. The tables that follow identify how each campus will award high school credit for each of these programs.

In addition, students could receive college credit for their high school Youth Apprenticeship experience. The program director needs to discuss the nature of the experience with the student to determine if it is equivalent to one or more professional courses in the program. The student will then be required to "test out" of these course using established departmental procedures for credit by exam. If the student successfully passes the "test out" the course will be documented on the student's UW-Stout transcript.
